TRE® stands for Tension Release Exercises and was developed by Dr David Bercelli as a way of releasing the muscular patterns of stress and tension that we hold in our bodies. Through his work Dr David Bercelli came to understand that the human organism, like all mammals, has an innate ability to shake/tremor after a stressful event is over in order to calm the nervous system, quieten the mind, and rest and recover physically.
TRE is a set of simple exercises which gently fatigue and stretch the body. The exercises help to activate our tremor reflex that allows the body to tremor/shake. Shaking is our natural way of restoring ourselves to a calm and relaxed state. We shake all the time, we can shake when we are excited, scared or angry and shaking is our body’s natural way of releasing extra charge and tension in the body. However, over time, we have learnt to suppress/switch off these shakes so as not to appear vulnerable. By switching off this body-based somatic process, we stop the body from doing what comes naturally to it, which is to shake/tremor in order to help our nervous system calm down, rest, and recover from a stressful event.
TRE works at a deep subconscious level and is completely body based, so no talking is required.
Tremoring releases the tension held in our muscles which then calms the nervous system bringing the body back into balance. It’s a natural way for the body to release tension and you are in complete control at all times, stopping and pausing the tremors throughout the session.
TRE can leave you feeling calmer, improve sleep and help you have an overall feeling of well-being and deep relaxation.
